The animals of the Dominican Republic are often just that--animals. Cows, pigs, and goats are food. Dogs and cats are often relied on to rid properties of pests. Chickens serve several purposes--a food source, they eat certain insects, and sport.

On this page I have captured several pictures of my favorite Dominican animals...

On the left is the meat store or the butcher shop. On the right under the small roof is tomorrows selected beef.

Every time I drive by this shop I feel a little bad for the poor fellow... I guess I never really feel too bad because we have stopped many times and bought a chunk of meat. Good Stuff!

Roasted pig is one of my favorite meats. The cool part is they just shove a stick through the pig and roast it. Nothing fancy!

Just looking at this baby makes my mouth water.

Not every animal is a food source. This Iguana is a native of the Dominican Republic. This picture was taken near Lago Enriquillo.

If you look closely the horns are a bit orange. I kind of think some people feed these lizards because they followed us around looking for some sort of hand out...

Many people know there are tarantulas in the Dominican Republic. There are myths that these little guys are poisonous. Not true!

I have been here for over four years and I finally saw one in the wild. It was trying to cross a lonely section of the highway. I stopped to snap this pic because I knew it was a treat to see one in the wild!

SWEET! It was huge. I should have put my hand by it to give something to measure by... I guess next time I will know better.

To me a frog is a frog but Dominicans can tell the difference between a male and female by just looking at it. I don't really get it but I guess this is a female frog. It is just hanging out on a plant on the back porch.
