Before Christopher Colombus discovered the island of Hispanola the only inhabitants were the Tiano Indians. There were several indigenous tribes and many of their drawings were rather advanced, when compared to other indian carvings.

Most tiano carvings or drawings show stick figure people and animals.

These pictures are called the "Faces of the Indians" They are located close to Lago Enriquillo in the middle of the country.

I have also seen tiano carvings in the caves closer to Punta Cana. The interesting thing about these carvings is they are outside, yet they have not really been damaged all that much.
One of the bummers about these carvings is that someone decided to carve their own message and deface the carvings. If you look in the above picture you will notice the modern carving... what a bummer!

This picture does a really good job of showing that the carvings really are out in the open. It is amazing to me that they have not been damaged more than they have.

It was fun to see them and I will be on the look out for more!
